Coaches of Character 2008-2009 Spring

SPRING CHARACTER COACHES OF THE YEAR HONORED

PrimeSource Mortgage and The Roswell National Bank are proud to announce the Spring "Character Counts! Coaches of the Year" for Chaves County. The Coaches' Recognition Program, in its seventh year, was created to encourage all high school coaches in Chaves County to "Pursue Victory with Honor" and exhibit the six pillars of character in the classroom, in the locker room, during practice, and during competitions throughout the year.

The program honors those individuals (selected through the nomination and voting process by the Character Counts! Coaches Committee) who have best exemplified the six pillars of character; trustworthiness, caring, respect, responsibility, fairness, and citizenship. All members of all coaching staffs from each of the eight high schools in Chaves County; Lake Arthur, Dexter, Hagerman, Gateway Christian, Valley Christian Academy, N.M.M.I., Roswell High School, and Goddard High School are eligible.

From the national Character Counts! Arizona Summit Accord document, "It is the duty of sports leadership - including coaches, athletic administrators, program directors and game officials - to promote sportsmanship and foster good character by teaching, enforcing, advocating and modeling these ethical principles."

The votes have been tabulated and our “Character Counts! Coaches of the Year” for the 2008/2009 Spring Sports programs are: Track - Shaun Wigley - GCS Tennis - Kelly McDonald - RHS Baseball - Mike Reeves - VCA Softball - Art Sandoval - RHS Golf - Larry VandenBout - DHS.

Each “Character Counts! Coach of the Year” will receive, compliments of PrimeSource Mortgage and The Roswell National Bank, an honorary plaque, a gift certificate for two from an area restaurant and a night's lodging in Ruidoso.

Girls’ Track

Character Counts! Girls’ Track Athletes

Our spring high school sports athlete recognition program concludes with Girls’ Track. Each athlete was nominated by her coach as the Character Counts! Athlete of the Year in her sport. They have been selected for exhibiting outstanding character not only in competitive situations, but also, during practice, in the locker room, in the classroom and in the community.

The essential elements of character-building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these “six pillars of character.”

The seven young people nominated by their coaches are; Samantha Dunnahoo from HHS, Amanda Fitts from GHS, Kindle Hein from RHS, Karen Garcia from DHS, Kathryn Hammonds from GCS, Jazmin Davila from LAHS and Graceanne Sewell from NMMI.
